Raw VI is well underway! It’s about 1/3 finished as of right now, and I’m on track with a late March release.

Here is chapter one.

“Did you know?” Jak asked as he picked up the Star Crystal.

“That he was a magic-user? Yes,” the old warrior replied quietly.

Jak laughed bitterly. He stood and held the crystal up to the pale sunlight, studying it briefly.

“I’ve never seen one so powerful,” the warrior said.

“Neither have I,” Jak lied, placing the crystal securely in one of his pouches. He turned to face the older man. “I didn’t catch your name.”

“Brentak, tribemaster.”

“Well, Brentak, tell me: what was your role to your former tribemaster?”

“Body guard and advisor. Technically I was the Guide. I relayed the tribemaster’s wishes to the rest of the tribe,” Brentak replied.

Jak listened carefully as he looked out over the mountainside village. He listened for lying, for any untruths the man might be inclined to speak.

But Brentak’s voice was steady, his stance sure.

“I get the impression that there was more to it,” he said finally.

“Yes.”

Jak turned to face Brentak finally, studying the man. He was large and built, his body made of slabs of muscle. He had an air of efficiency, even though the hair in his beard was mostly gray and wrinkles gathered at the corners of his eyes and mouth.

He was old, but he still stood straight, and his movements were quick and decisive.

Jak imagined he would be a formidable foe.

It was obvious that the others respected him and looked up to him, relied on him even. While Jak had been doling out orders and asking questions, getting a general sense of the situation and, for the moment, ensuring that Tolvar on the island knew the war was over, at least with his tribe and the elves, they had all looked to Brentak to speak for them.

“I’m going to be relying on you Brentak,” he said after a long moment. “I’m not going to be like your old tribemaster. I cannot stay here and watch over everything. I have another tribe to run, I have an entire island to bring peace to, other villages to talk with, maintain alliances with.”

“You speak with them personally?” Brentak replied, a small amount of surprise breaking through his calm.

“I do. I spend as much time away from my village as I do in it. Sometimes more. I ensure that the important things get done by doing them myself. That’s why I’m here. That’s why I killed your idiot tribemaster. So...what else did you do? You want to tell me something.”

“Yes. I served as a...guardian, between Toval and the rest of the tribe.”

“How so?” Jak asked, curious despite everything.

Brentak looked uncomfortable for the first time, casting a quick, unhappy glance at the dead man beside them. “He wasn’t always like this. He was scared in the beginning, he became tribemaster young. But I helped him. Guided him. He grew into a decent leader, but he was too taken with whims and anger and, later, hatred. And greed.”

He sighed mournfully. “I did what I could, but at some point I learned that he only heard what he wanted to. And he grew vengeful with those who told him what he did not want to hear. I should have killed him at some point, but...I couldn’t. He reminded me of his father, for better or for worse, and his father was my best friend. When he died, a piece of my heart died with him. I couldn’t let that go.”

Slowly, he looked out over the mountainside. “And we all suffered for my weakness.”

“That won’t happen again, will it?” Jak asked.

Brentak’s eyes returned to his own, filled now with a kind of cold, hard strength. “No. It will not. If I feel that you are leading us to our doom, I will challenge you. I know you will kill me, but I will challenge you.”

Jak nodded. “Good. It should be that way. And you won’t have to. This island must come to peace, or we will all die.”

Brentak nodded. “I see that now.”

“I’m not sure if you do,” Jak murmured. “You know the Barrens?”

“I have heard of them,” he replied. “We all have. That is the Tolvar legacy.”

“They are growing. And they will keep growing unless we find some way to fix Uzek’s Transgression.”

Brentak sneered unconsciously at that, but it came and went quickly. “Uzek,” he murmured.

“Do you know anything that might help us? Is there anyone who might know what exactly happened?”

But the big warrior was shaking his head. “No. Our control and eventual outlaw of magic was not done completely out of hatred. Everyone who knew what happened that day in any real detail either died there at the Transgression, or disappeared elsewhere on the island.”

Jak frowned. “What do you mean? Where? Who?”

“I don’t know where,” Brentak replied. “But for some years after, our most knowledgeable magic-user remained by our side.”

“I thought that was Uzek.”

“No. Uzek was powerful, yes, but it was Rall who knew just about everything about magic. He was old even when I was young. He knew old secrets. He had a tribe within a tribe. His inner circle. His...Revek.”

“Revek?”

“That is what they called themselves. The Revek. They served magic, studied it, twisted it. He grew more secretive, more obsessive. I eventually learned that he was still playing with death magic, even after we agreed to forbid it. I almost killed him. I should have. But he was very powerful, he and his inner circle. We settled on exile, but in reality, they chose to leave. I have no idea where they are now, or even if they are still alive.”

He paused, then looked at Jak more intently. “But you say the Barrens, they grow?”

“Every day. Slowly, but surely. They will eventually consume the whole island. An island of death, where no plants will grow, and sickness will reign.”

“I did not know that,” he whispered. “How can we stop it?”

“That’s precisely what I’m trying to determine right now. That was why I did this: so we could stop the fighting and focus on the saving and the healing. And now I must turn my attention to the karn.”

“I do not believe you will succeed with them as you have here,” Brentak muttered.

“Don’t be so sure. You are aware that the embyr control the karn, control their minds? Force them to fight?” he asked.

The warrior nodded. “Yes. But I also know that the others fight of their own free will.”

“Not all of them. I have made a lasting peace with some of them. Dozens and dozens of karn live among my people, your former brethren and some elves as well, in Avat’s Forest. We do not fight. We share meals and caves, hunt and battle together, as friends.”

Brentak stared at him for a long time. “I will have to see it to believe it,” he said finally.

“I will gladly have you see it. But tell me of your war with the karn.”

He sighed. “It goes poorly. You know of our villages?”

“I know Fair Field, obviously. I know that Wetstone is nestled up against the northern edge of the central lake.”

“Shadow Lake,” he said.

“Interesting. I know of another two villages, farther east, towards the embyr’s territory.”

“The first is Gather Village. That is where our food here mostly comes from. They hunt, they fish, they forage, and bring back the excess here. Otherwise, we would not survive. Farther is the Verdant Valley, and Verdant Village. That valley is lush with life, overflowing with it. And with slate, clay, good trees, everything we need to survive. It is also too close to embyr villages. We fight the karn constantly there. Sometimes they make it to Gather or Wetstone. They have many, many karn. They have been breeding them.”

Jak shook his head, horrified at the thought. Being mind-enslaved was bad enough, but that?

He had to end this as quickly as possible. His mind was already working. He’d been thinking in the background of all this on how to end the conflict with the karn, and he thought he had an idea. It was an unstable one, and relied too much on luck, but after everything, it was all he had to go on.

“I have an order for you to carry out,” Jak said.

Brentak straightened up. “Yes, tribemaster.”

“Send a runner to Verdant. Tell them to abandon it. Take as much as they can carry and flee to Wetstone and Gather. Reinforce there.”

“But...the karn will have it then.”

“I know, but not for long. I believe I can find a way to end the embyr’s control over the karn. And once I do that, I can unite the karn and bring us all to peace. Then we can retake Verdant.”

Brentak looked dubious. “How long do you think it will take? The cold days approach. Even now, I’m not sure if we have enough to survive them…”

“Not long,” Jak replied. “I understand your concern, but the karn have clearly bled you nearly dry. How many have you lost against them? Against the elves? Against my own tribe? How many did Toval send to their deaths?”

“Too many,” Brentak muttered bitterly.

“Exactly. I know you are most familiar with fighting, with taking by force, but as I just proved, there is another way. I could have waged war on this village, killing everyone here, and losing dozens, maybe hundreds of my own people in the process.”

“But you didn’t.”

“No, I didn’t. Because I want to preserve life. There will always be a need to fight, always the struggle of survival, but we need not wage it against each other. I have proven we can work together, make it easier, safer.”

Brentak still seemed uncomfortable.

“I know this isn’t easy for you. I don’t want to force you to do my bidding, Brentak. You strike me as a smart and honest warrior whose concern for his people outweighs his concern for himself. So, as one warrior trying to watch out for his people to another, I am asking you to trust me. Because I need your help with this. And the decisions that we make over the next few days will determine if they live or die,” Jak said, gesturing to the village below them.

Brentak stood staring at the village for a long moment. His expression might have been carved from stone.

Slowly, it softened, very gently, almost imperceptible.

He turned back fully to Jak and straightened up to his full height.

“I will do as you ask, tribemaster.”

“Thank you, Brentak. And whatever excess was being stored in there,” he said, gesturing now to the caves he had found Toval in, “give it to the people. Feed them. Heal them. Shelter them. I got the impression Toval was keeping a lot to himself.”

“He was,” Brentak said quietly. “And I will. What will you do?”

“I must speak with my own people. But I will send help. It’s obvious that this mountainside is no longer habitable. If they stay here during the cold days, too many of them will die. So, I will go put together a group to come bearing supplies to help them survive for now, and I will find them other places to live. Safer places.”

The warrior nodded. He hesitated, briefly.

“A question?” Jak asked.

“Yes...do you truly think you can make peace with the karn?”

“I do. Once I find a way to break the embyr’s hold over them, Talon will help me unite them.”

Brentak’s face lit up with surprise and joy. “That old miserable bastard is still alive?!”

“He is...do you know him?”

“Yes!” He laughed and shook his head. “We fought. More than once. He...is an honorable karn. I never thought I would grow to respect a karn, but...I would much like to see him again.”

“I’m sure he’d like to see you. I’ll tell him of you.”

“I would appreciate it greatly.”

“All right, I have to go now. Get them used to the idea of leaving the mountainside, living elsewhere on the island, and, if at all possible, living alongside elves, magic-users, and possibly karn.”

“That last part will be difficult, but the first? We have known that this mountainside is dead for a few seasons now. Many are ready to leave. Many hunger. They will be sorry to leave, but not that sorry. Though, you should address them.”

Jak nodded. “That’s a good idea.”

He focused as he stepped back over to the Blood Stone, where the curved sheer wall of rock would help carry his voice to the others in the village below. His mind kept wanting to go in other directions. There was so much to do!

He noticed several people looked up immediately as he stepped into place.

“My new tribemates!” he called, and then everyone looked up at him. “I must depart to other parts of the island. As I have looked out over this village, the truth has been revealed to me: this village will not bear you through the winter. We must find new land for you live in. I will speak with the other tribes, and we will find safe places for you and your families to live and weather the cold days! While I am gone, Brentak will speak for me. Prepare yourselves! I will return!”

It sounded so strange, hearing his voice echoing over the village like that. He worried briefly about how the villagers would take it, but another cheer of ‘Tribemaster!’ sounded.

They seemed happy.

He could understand that. This place was bleak. It looked stripped, barren. There was hardly any plant life. Everything was rock and mud.

Once it had been a happy home, but no longer.

Now, they needed to adapt and make hard changes, just like everyone else on the island.

Jak walked back over to Brentak. “Their lives are in your hands while I’m gone,” he said.

He didn’t want to cut it so fine as to outright tell him that, but just as he was asking for trust, Jak was also putting a lot of trust in the old warrior.

“As it has been for many seasons,” Brentak replied easily. “Don’t worry, I will handle them well. We know each other, we trust each other. And they are happy. We’ve been aching for change for many seasons now. And it has finally come.”

Jak nodded and clapped him once on the shoulder, then began making his way down through the village.

The man was right.

For better or for worse…

Change had come to them all.

The Misty Vixen Newsletter (March 2023)

A lot happened in February. Let’s address that first.

February was a very busy month. Information on all of these:

  • First and foremost: Raw V. I finally got it out, and for reasons I’ll go into below, I had to swap the cover art out. That’s why there’s several different links.

  • Monster Girl Inn - The Complete Trilogy: This has no new content, it simply collects all three novels. I’ve dropped the price to 2.99$ and there it will likely stay.

  • Sci-Fi Shared Universe Collection - Volume 01: I’ll talk more about this below.

  • Dragons & Damsels: This is out. I’ve got a short story in this collection that is completely stand alone. Characters, setting, and plot are all self contained. That being said, if you liked any of my fantasy stuff, you’ll like this. I was in mind of Monster Girl Inn somewhat when I wrote it, so similar vibes.

  • Audiobooks

Now let’s talk about my Sci-Fi Collection.

I made a blog post explaining the reasoning for this happening. You can read it here. The short of it is: It really bothered me not having those books where my main market is anymore, and also taking down two and a half million words worth of content hurt my wallet more than I thought it would. So I decided to repackage them into cheap, better-formatted Collections.

This also means I’ll get the opportunity to write new content for series I thought were finished. Not all of them, as some of them I’m finding that I really have nothing further to add, but some. I’m basically examining each one as I come to them and see if anything comes to mind.

That being said, it does mean that I’ll finally be writing a proper epilogue to Like A Fine Wine in the form of a novelette. The same is true for Sex & Survival.

Here’s a quick rundown of what each Collection will contain.

  • SCI-FI SHARED UNIVERSE - VOLUME 01: HELLCATS | MY UNDEAD LOVER | ALIEN HAREM | AMAZONIAN’S LOVE + All Associated Shorts & new shorts for Hellcats & Amazonian’s Love

  • FANTASY SHARED UNIVERSE: WANDERLUST | MY UNDEAD LOVER | LARGE & LOVELY | ROYAL LUST | LUST & ADVENTURE | LAY OF THE LAND | SNAKESKIN | ADVENTUROUS + All Associated Shorts & new shorts for Wanderlust, Lust & Adventure, and Adventurous for sure.

  • PARANORMAL SHARED UNIVERSE: PARANORMAL PASSIONS | PINK | ROOMMATES WITH BENEFITS | PARASEXUAL + All Associated Shorts & a new short for Parasexual for sure.

  • POST-APOCALYPTIC SHARED UNIVERSE: Sex & Survival | The Pale Redhead | A New World + All Associated Shorts & new shorts for all three of them. Really looking forward to writing The Pale Redhead 4.

  • SCI-FI SHARED UNIVERSE - VOLUME 02: DESIRE | BLIND DATE | LIKE A SEX TOY | LIKE A FINE WINE + All Associated Shorts & a new epilogue for Like A Fine Wine, & probably new shorts for all three of the others.

Each collection will be 99 cents and in the Kindle Unlimited, meaning that I’ll need to be removing all my novels and shorts and collections from all other places on the internet, most notably here on my own website.

Some things will not be going in the collections. Valkyries, Demoness, & Women of the Wild will all remain for free on my website.

I’ll be releasing these as I get to them, (it takes a bit of time to format 2.5M words), but I’m intending to have them all out before May. And yes, each of them will get sexy new covers, with sexy new alternate nudes.

I have to admit, it’s been fun writing the newer content, and it’s reminding me why I liked writing bonus shorts in the first place. I can’t be positive, but I might bring them back in some capacity for future titles.

Real quick, we’ll talk about what’s coming up this month, so that I can then get to the unhappy part.

Honestly? Not much. I’m hoping to bust my ass and possibly get Raw VI out before the end of the month. Besides the pair of audiobooks, it’s all I’ve got in terms of announcements.

Now, let’s talk about the unhappy future.

Raw V sort of scared the shit out of me. You know how in movies there comes that scene where someone gets a gun shoved in their face and all other sound drops away as the camera zooms slowly in on them and you can just see the sheer terror on their face? That’s kind of what I felt like when it seemed like Raw V, and thus Raw as a series, was dead in the water.

I had a lot of troubles at the end of 2022, and have spent the first two months of this year trying to get my shit back in order. I mostly feel better, and I’ve been a lot more consistently productive.

However, there was a six month gap between the release of Raw IV and Raw V. Which is an ESPECIALLY long time in the harem genre. Obviously, this wasn’t on purpose. I fully intended to have Raw V written and released sometime last November. But I had something of a breakdown when I tried writing it back in October, and I was forced to put it aside.

There’s little in the way of hard evidence when it comes to determining or predicting the success of a given title, but this many years into the game, I’ve gotten better about learning to read the algorithm, and it was looking like Raw V was dead on arrival. That was my ‘staring down the barrel of a gun’ moment. Because Raw V flopping doesn’t just mean a book I wrote flopped. It means that the next four novels that I have planned, the next four novels in my most successful series EVER written, are now virtually meaningless, and would in fact be a bad decision to write.

This is precisely why so many authors drop series abruptly. Because writing a sequel to a dead series isn’t simply writing a book that won’t sell, it’s also not writing a book that will sell. Every time we choose to write something, we also choose not to write everything else. That’s part of the reason this job is so fucking stressful.

So, with that happening, I did the only thing I could think to do, and I swapped covers. I have personally seen this move take a book that was failing to sell and send it into the top 1,000, which is insane. THAT is the power of cover art. Literally the exact same book, and yet suddenly it’s selling 20x as much.

Yeah, it really bothers me, too.

I wanted to put Zora on the cover because she’s a main character in this one, but I knew it was a risk because too many people hate anthro characters on their covers. I figured this late into the series it wouldn’t matter, but apparently I was wrong. After I swapped out a drawing of Rylee I was going to save for the next collection (a drawing that is admittedly much more visually appealing), it immediately started selling better. Although I can tell that damage was definitely done, it hasn’t done as well as it could have. Which, in a way, is sort of my fault, but also…I wouldn’t have had a mental breakdown if I could have avoided it? I don’t really know what else to say there. The dice just landed against me.

That alone was frightening enough, but I’ve faced it down before. No, what is really freaking me out is Artificial Intelligence. It’s become clear that 2023 is the year of AI. Right now, there are discussions in this fandom, and certainly all others, over the validity, legality, and morality of using AI-generated cover art. Speaking for myself: I have not, nor do I intend to, used AI. But something that people also aren’t realizing is that whatever fucking exponential breakthrough AI has experienced has also resulted in commensurate advancement of book-writing AI.

Yeah, that’s fucking frightening.

Given the fact that this genre is led by four ghost farm pen names who pump out works as quickly as they possibly can, I have no doubt that haremlit will eventually begin to fill up with AI-produced content. We won’t be looking at dozens of releases a month, we’ll be looking at hundreds. I don’t know when this will happen, but unless there is some massive change, and soon, it’s going to happen. There are some other people in the industry claiming we will see it begin before the year is out.

Which means my job is being threatened. Which means, functionally speaking, my life is being threatened. Because my job is basically my life. For better or for worse, that is the position I find myself in.

I might be wrong about all this. I hope I am. In either case, since I have no intention on integrating AI with my work in any capacity, it means that I need to assume the worst and shore up my library while I still can. In short, it’s caused me to reassess my current plan.

In the most immediate sense, that means nothing will change, because writing Raw novels as quickly as possible remains my most logical next step.

But beyond that? I’m still reassessing. At the moment, Raw gives me some time to think, and that is what I’ll be spending March doing: writing Raw and thinking and reasoning out my next project. I believe I may already know what it will be, but the past several months have taught me one thing: I need to shut the fuck up more and let time pass.

So, a month from now, I should have a clearer image of what’s coming after Raw. If it is what I currently believe it to be, it will make many people happy, at least.

Wish me luck.

Sci-Fi Shared Universe - Volume 01

The first of my backlog collections is here!

This back collects:

  • The Hellcats Trilogy + All 7 Previously Written Bonus Shorts + The Life, a brand new short written specifically for this collection.

  • Exploration + 2 Previously Written Bonus Shorts

  • Alien Harem 1 & 2 + 1 Previously Written Bonus Short

  • Amazonian’s Love + 1 Previously Written Bonus Short + Meaning, a brand new short written specifically for this collection.

I originally thought I might be able to cram all of my stories from each universe into one collection per universe, but this turned out not to be true for my Sci-Fi Universe, even after removing Valkyries.

Everything has been reformatted and touched up a bit. Essentially, I made it more legible. I used to write in very large paragraphs, which I only learned rather recently, I am embarrassed to admit, look like walls of text on a Kindle. For whatever reason, that just never pinged my radar until last year. I also divided up the chapters, because I used to write WAY longer chapters. So for example, Hellcats now has 20+ chapters instead of 7. There were also a few minor corrections and edits here and there, but it’s pretty much the same as when it was earlier published.

Writing the new content was really weird, but in a good way. It strangely put me back in a mindset to liking writing the bonus shorts, and sort of reminded me why I wrote them in the first place.

I’m hoping that they don’t come off as too strange or jarring. I set The Life about 3 years after the end of Hellcats, and Meaning about 2 years after the end of Amazonian’s Love because writing for those characters again was somewhat bizarre. I tried to get the tone right, but at the same time I found myself wanting to make them different. I figured that, given enough time, they would have changed as people, so it would make sense.

Here’s hoping I was right.

If you were looking for a follow-up to Exploration or Alien Harem I apologize. I examined both of them and pretty much just had nothing. One of the problems with my older universes is that they began to feel a little redundant. Anything I might’ve felt like saying in either of those, it felt like I already said it with The Life. And I feel like the final short for each was ending enough.

Also, here’s the nude alternate version of the new cover art.

Anyway, the Fantasy Shared Universe is up next.

My Backlog Part 2 - The Return

Here’s a place I genuinely assumed I’d never be.

We’re approaching the year anniversary of the time I began seriously pondering pulling down my backlog, aka all my old non-haremlit material.

A lot can happen in a year, as we have learned since 2020.

Now that time has passed and I’ve had a chance to see precisely what happens when I take down roughly 85% of my entire library, I don’t really like where it’s left me.

Like everything I do, my decisions are made on a gauge that falls somewhere between Personal on one side and Business on the other. The more time has gone on, and the more I’ve studied the results, and considered it all, the more I’ve felt like I made the wrong choice. Or no, that doesn’t quite feel right. It’s more that I made the choice that made the most sense at the time, but it didn’t really work out the way I had hoped it would.

On the personal side of things, I just kept coming back to this simple fact: I took down 2,500,000 words of content. Two and a half MILLION words that I wrote over the course of years. Functionally gone, given that I would say that the amount of people who visit my site combined with the amount of people who might come across me and investigate further on the other sites (Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, etc.), are less than 2% of the people who come across me on Amazon.

And that just…bothers me. Like, that number kind of haunts me.

Two and a half million words.

Roughly four solid years of work.

An investment of THOUSANDS of dollars, if you consider all the cover art made.

And, on the more practical business side of things, I have definitely felt the impact of those missing titles more than I thought I would. It’s partially due to the fact that I had something of a breakdown in October, and it caused me not only to not publish anything until January, but also to take six months to publish the next book in my most successful series ever. And that six month hiatus did some damage to Raw.

So, an idea came to me in that way that ideas sometimes do. Problems, theories, conditions, all of it can swirl around for weeks or even months in my brain, like a computer running through iteration after iteration, and then suddenly the solution snaps into focus.

I have decided to bring most of my backlog back in the form of collections. They will be 99 cents and in the Kindle Unlimited. Which means I’m going to have to take them back down from everywhere else.

Here’s the thing that might get the attention of those who have read and enjoyed my backlog: I am going to take this opportunity to write brand new material for most of my old stories.

In truth, that was mostly the position I did not think I’d find myself in: writing new material for long-finished stories. I have to admit I’m surprised to discover that I actually am rather interested in this. As of right now, I’ve already begun working on a new short story taking place after all the other short stories for Hellcats, and it’s been…interesting to revisit that series and those characters.

At this moment, I do not know if I will be writing something for every series and story, but I will be making at least an attempt at them all. I may step up to the plate and discover there’s nothing left to be said. Quick example: not sure if I’ll have anything to say for Lay of the Land. But I’ll at least give it a shot.

Here is a look at how it’s going to be divided up.

SCI-FI SHARED UNIVERSE

  • VOL. 01

    • Hellcats + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

    • Exploration + All Bonus Shorts + New Short (Possibly)

    • Alien Harem + All Bonus Shorts + New Short (Possibly)

    • Amazonian’s Love + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

  • VOL. 02

    • Desire + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

    • Blind Date + New Short (Possibly)

    • Like A Sex Toy + New Short

    • Like A Fine Wine + New Epilogue

FANTASY SHARED UNIVERSE

  • Wanderlust + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

  • My Undead Lover + All Bonus Shorts + New Short (Possibly)

  • Royal Lust + All Bonus Shorts + New Short (Possibly)

  • Large & Lovely + New Short

  • Lust & Adventure + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

  • Snakeskin + New Short

  • Lay of the Land + New Short (Possibly)

  • Adventurous + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

PARANORMAL SHARED UNIVERSE

  • Paranormal Passions + All Bonus Shorts + New Short (Possibly)

  • Pink + New Short (Possibly)

  • Roommates With Benefits + New Short (Possibly)

  • Parasexual + All Bonus Shorts + New Short

POST-APOCALYPTIC SHARED UNIVERSE

  • Sex & Survival + All Bonus Shorts + New Epilogue

  • The Pale Redhead + New Short

  • A New World + New Short

So, needless to say, this is all subject to change. And, obviously there’s some oddities in there. I’ll address them all below.

  • Sci-Fi: I originally wanted to make each universe its own Collection, but unfortunately the Sci-Fi Universe proved too big and had to be broken up into two Volumes. Also, you’ll notice Valkyries is missing. The reason for that is because basically I don’t want to fuck with trying to put it on Amazon again. It will remain as a bonus download or a purchase option.

  • Fantasy: Demoness is missing from this because I am going to rewrite it, and making the original Demoness purchasable again seems disingenuous, so it will remain a free download. The same is true for Women of the Wild, given it’s not a great stand-alone title.

  • Paranormal: All but one of those are marked possibly because I’ll be honest, I don’t think I can come up with much of anything for those three. It was a struggle enough doing it last time around. But I think I really should do something for Parasexual.

  • Post-Apocalyptic: I guess the only real thing to point out here is that it isn’t a complete collection because, obviously, Haven is still up, and I can’t just put it up again. So technically it’s not complete but it’s close enough.

Some stand-outs from the new material are Like A Fine Wine and Sex & Survival. I intend for the bonuses to be longer than a simple short, maybe closer to novella, or maybe novelette, although we shall see how it actually turns out. I always wanted to write some sort of follow-up for Sex & Survival, and even once had a fourth novel planned, but ultimately decided against it. And, obviously, it’d be nice to give the Like A Fine Wine group more closure.

So, uh, yeah, that’s everything. Sorry if this seems weird, but I’m hoping it’ll make a lot of people happy, at least, and help offset some of my own problems.

I’m not 100% sure when this will start happening, but almost certainly the Sci-Fi Volume 01 is going to go up in March. I’m having new cover art made for everything. Well…sorta new. I mean, it is new, but I’m having one of my artists recreate already established characters with updated looks and sexier poses.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

The Misty Vixen Newsletter (February 2023)

So, here we are at the beginning of the second month of 2023. In my opinion, January tends to be worst month of the year. It’s the darkest, coldest, most miserable time. So it’s nice that it’s passed.

I didn’t get as much done last month as I’d hoped, but considering where I was mentally this time last year? I will absolutely take a lazy January over a mentally broken one.

So, things that have happened since last I updated.

I’m intending February will be a little more productive.

I intend to have Raw V published somewhere in mid-late February. I’m feeling some pressure to get this done as while getting Monster Girl Inn III did help the overall state of my authorship, it’s clear that it wasn’t enough to sort of kickstart it back to full life. Which made enough sense, given it was the third book in a trilogy that is not all that popular. I need to get the next Raw novel out and hope that it breathes more life into my library.

I’ve been getting some work done on my cougar harem. It’s definitely weird to try and fit what I would normally make a longer series into a trilogy. That being said, I do now have a skeletal outline for the entire trilogy, the first piece of artwork, a rough idea of how I want the first book to go, and the first couple of chapters for the first book written. I’m still kind of flipflopping on how I want to handle it. I would like to get as much written as possible while finishing writing Raw, and then post the first book after Raw is finished. But I am very bad about waiting. Once a book is done, I want it out. And I think most of my readers do as well. The thing is, I’m not even sure if it makes more sense to wait at this point, or if I should just get it out. Data and numbers in this job are often complicated and even conflicting. That being said, I intend to take a little bit of time off between Raw V and Raw VI to get some work done on the cougar harem.

Other than that, the only other thing I have to update is my horror harem. At this point I feel like I should just shut the fuck up about it, because every time I open my mouth, it seems like reality is dead set on proving me wrong. The Sci-Fi/Horror harem did not work out for reasons that basically boil down to, every time I went to work on it, I kept feeling like I was not writing a harem. So I finally set it aside. I have shifted focus to my submarine horror harem. I have the cover art for it and it is the story and universe that is speaking most strongly to me.

I don’t want to talk about it TOO much, but it’s post-apocalyptic survival and, because some people seemed a little confused, for the record, the entire thing will not be taking place on a single submarine. It will have a lot of locations and situations. I really like what I’ve come up with so far for it, and I’ve gotten some written, and I feel like it has a lot of potential. I’ll speak more on it when I’ve made more progress. Really, I feel like if you liked the general vibe of A Warm Place or Haven, you will like this one. It’s just a bit grimmer.

Oh yeah, last thing, Like A Fine Wine is coming down at the end of the month. All of them are still 99 cents, including the Complete Collection, so if you want to grab it, do so. It’ll be going up on Smashwords and other outlets eventually, and the Complete Collection will also be available for free download directly from my website later.

That’s about all I’ve got for now. Now I’m going back to playing the Dead Space remake.

The frigid wind that blew in off the tormented slate-gray waters felt like a dark omen as Jak made his way down the rocky shoreline.

It felt like he was always drawn back to this particular spot, as surely as the sun was drawn to the far horizon at the end of each day. This unassuming stretch of rock and earth, ever-changing beneath the eternal waves of the sea, tucked away on one corner of the island he now called home.

Jak paused in his determined strides down the shore as he reached a specific spot.

This was where it had all started for him.

His new life. His new self.

Though it had been a season since he’d awoken here, and it looked different than what his memory told him, he somehow knew that this was the spot where he had regained consciousness with a giant crow somewhere nearby.

A sharp caw drew his attention.

He looked up and ahead. The giant crow regarded him with a dark gaze from a tree branch that sagged under its weight.

Those eyes held warning.

In every other instance, he had heeded this warning.

But not today.

Jak resumed his walk, making his way towards the crow, preparing himself for the worst. He had no idea what would happen. It could be anything.

But he had to know.

Perhaps this was a bad time for it. The sun had risen and fallen fifteen times since he’d solidified his alliance with the elves of Ara Forest. And since he had murdered their leader. That was something he had grown to regret less as time had gone on.

Most dangers came from the outside. Creatures, rival tribes, bad weather, sickness.

But the worst dangers often came from within.

And the more he thought on it, the more Jak felt that a bad leader might be among the most lethal of all perils a tribe might face. It seemed to matter little if they were incompetent, lazy, greedy, or cruel, as it all amounted to the same thing.

A dying tribe.

After that, the war against the Tolvar had truly begun.

Jak had hardly been home to his village and his bond-mates since then. As a warrior, as the warrior on this island, as far as he knew, the responsibility to plan and personally lead assaults fell to him. And so he had fought, and battled, and bled, and killed.

From Ara Forest, over to Talon’s Hilltop, and down along the border between Avat’s Forest and the Barrens, he worked with every single ally he had gained so far to make the land safe, eliminate or drive off any hostile tribesmen, and then, more recently, stab out at the Tolvar. He’d led a dozen warparties over the last four days, assaulting any Tolvar they found, pushing the Tolvar’s territory back with a firm hand.

He didn’t like all the killing, but it was coming easier to him these days.

The crow let out another sharp caw, this one louder, and flapped its huge wings. Jak kept walking, making for the end of the coastline.

Something was there, something important, he was sure of it.

“I’m not stopping today,” Jak said as he approached the crow.

He expected it to attack him, and he didn’t want to kill it, the bird felt almost like a part of the tribe at this point.

But it did not attack.

It simply cawed again and then took to flight, flapping off in the direction he was headed.

Interesting.

Jak continued, picking up his pace, keeping an eye out for any threats even though he hadn’t actually run into anything living in this area save for the crow.

As interested as he was in what lay in the far corner of the island, he was more interested in what had initially pushed him out his village so soon after coming back.

The mysterious tall blue figure.

At this point, he was convinced she was real. He’d been asking around and several people had related seeing a tall blue-skinned figure, usually described as a woman, but often no more than a fleeting glimpse.

Somehow, in some way, the crow, the desolate corner of the island, and the blue woman were all connected.

Jak had never truly gone in search of her, and he was willing to leave it, but less so now. The situation on the island was moving inexorably towards some sort of end, things coming faster now, like a river during a heavy rain.

And that river was more dangerous.

Things that might not have caused problems before might do so under such conditions, and Jak was convinced he could no longer afford to put off the mystery.

Whatever this being was, they seemed very magical.

He wasn’t sure if this woman truly was a Spirit of the Forest, but that had started him down a path of thought that led him to where he was right now. When he had gone in search of the nymphs for the first time, that intentional investigation had drawn them out.

Perhaps something similar would happen with the blue woman.

As Jak neared the end of the rocky area, he saw that it reconnected with the curious trench that ran parallel to the shoreline. Coming into it, he looked back along its length. That trench had always bothered him, something about it seemed oddly unnatural. At times he’d wondered if it was the result of some very old spell gone wrong.

In his mind’s eye, he saw a massive fireball being released, an absolutely huge one, larger than a boulder, and racing down where the trench now was. He turned around, looking to where the trench ended. It was in the deader part of that corner of the island, and there was a rise in the land, almost as if it had been pushed up from underneath somehow.

Only a handful of skeletal trees lay scattered around.

He’d never been this close before.

Jak could feel something faint on the air, something magical that seemed to hum just beyond the edge of hearing.

What could it possibly be?

All of his thoughts were interrupted as he abruptly became aware of the fact that he was being watched. Spinning around, looking back across the trench to his forest, he caught a flash of blue among the trees.

He took off, sprinting across the trench and plunging into the forest.

Possibilities and potential outcomes raced through his mind as he dodged between the trees. So far, he hadn’t really run up against much that could outright kill him. Some had given him pause.

Some he hoped never to discover the answer to the question of: who would win? His nymph allies being a great example.

But this blue woman was a mystery. He didn’t actually know a thing about her, and what little he had gleaned wasn’t too useful.

He was learning things, though. Like the fact that she was either incredibly fast, incredible skilled at moving without being heard, or both. Beyond that initial glimpse, he saw nothing, heard nothing, and could find only the barest hints of a trail leading into the forest.

At one point he hesitated, looking around, uncertain of where to go, and he saw the briefest flash of blue to his left and took off again.

It quickly became obvious that this was not going to go the way he wanted it to, though as he picked up the pace, Jak thought he might be closing the gap. How fast was this...person? Spirit? Something else entirely?

He briefly saw the tall blue figure dash between two trees ahead of him, adjusted his course, and ran as fast as he could. As he kept going, he became aware of another sound: the heavy breathing and then the deep growl of a blade-toothed tiger.

It was somewhere farther off to his left. Something to keep track of, but for the moment he needed to stay focused on–

Jak skidded to a halt as he heard a shout of pain come from the direction of the blade-toothed tiger. Gritting his teeth, he was briefly torn. Though his recognition of the voice was very faint, he felt compelled to help, but he was catching up with the mysterious figure, or had been until he’d stopped. But even as he looked…

Directly ahead of him, partially obscured behind a tree and among some foliage, he caught sight of a very tall blue woman, staring at him, her single visible eye bright gray.

She had lured him he here, he realized at once.

Why?

To see what he would do? The choice was at least obvious: continue his pursuit of her, or go help whoever it was that was in peril.

With a short, irritated growl, Jak turned and began sprinting towards the sound of conflict, drawing his adze. He knew the tall blue woman would be gone by the time he tried to track her down again, but this had been a shaky prospect at best anyway.

Jak burst into a clearing a moment later and found a blade-toothed tiger looming over a familiar figure, who was lying on the ground, bleeding. Reacting on instinct, he hurled the adze towards the powerful beast. It flipped through the air, closing the distance between them in an instant, and buried itself in the huge tiger’s side.

The beast roared and reacted immediately, turning towards the thing that had hurt it.

Jak prepared himself for an intense battle, but the person he shared the clearing with surprised him by surging to her feet and leaping at the immense creature and burying a blade in its throat. She screamed as she yanked the blade sideways, opening up a huge wound on the tiger’s neck. It roared once again and managed to throw her off, but immediately began to weaken.

He moved forward to finish the job, if it needed doing, but as he got there the blade-toothed tiger took another few stumbling steps and then collapsed into a heap of fur and limbs, blood continually pouring from its torn neck.

Jak regarded the wounded woman who was repositioning herself so that she sat against a tree. One hand was over her thigh, which the tiger had cut open with its immense claws.

He recognized her, the embyr who had nearly killed him once.

“You’re hurt. We have some healers in my tribe,” he said as he crouched by the tiger and yanked his adze free.

“I can heal myself,” the embyr woman replied.

He saw a curiously dark flash of magic as she smoothed her hand out over her wound and when she pulled it back, the deep cuts had been sealed up.

For a long moment, the two of them remained motionless, staring at each other. Finally, her eyes dipped to the adze in his hand. Jak shook the blood from it, then slipped it back into his waistwrap. Stepping forward, he offered her a hand.

The embyr looked at it for another long moment, then reached up and took it. Her skin was hot and rough in several places, and as he helped her to her feet, he immediately got the sense that she was exceptionally agile. Something in the way she moved, in the way she articulated her body in regaining her feet.

He let go of her and took a step back, to give her some space.

She seemed less tense than their first meeting, but still very on guard.

“So,” Jak said, finally breaking the silence, “you came.”

“Yes,” she agreed, “I came. Though I’m not sure if it is to join your supposed tribe of exiles...I was more looking for a place of peace.” She pursed her lips in distaste as she looked down at the dead animal. “So much for that.”

“Avat’s Forest is probably one of the safest places on the island,” Jak said.

“I know,” she replied, returning her attention to him. “In truth, this was the first real opposition I’ve run into. I managed to avoid the rest. I’ve seen some of your people. Luckily they didn’t see me.”

Jak studied the woman as she fell silent again. She didn’t seem to want to leave, but she also seemed uncertain about how to proceed.

“We never learned each other’s names,” he said.

“You first,” she replied.

“Very well. I am Jak.”

“I am Keeza.”

“All right, what brought you to Avat’s Forest?”

He felt like he was in an awkward position. He had invited her here, and he would accept her into the tribe, but at the same time, he worried about what might happen if she was moving around the forest on her own.

He trusted his tribemates, but some had very bad thoughts about the embyr.

Then again, he’d been concerned about the Tolvar and the karn, and yet his home village now had half a dozen karn living among them.

“I spoke truth before: I seek peace. I want to live without being in constant battle,” she replied.

“Is that what living among your tribe was like?”

She lost any semblance of a smile. “In a manner of speaking, yes. Not all battles involve fists and clubs. Your offer sounded genuine, and from what I have overheard as I’ve hidden from...those less skilled at tracking than you or your karn companion, it seems that this forest is a place of peace and rest, at least compared to the rest of the island.”

“I would say that’s mostly accurate,” Jak replied.

“Mostly?”

He nodded at the tiger. “Beyond the beasts we share the forest with, there are the corrupted that come in from the Barrens, and the occasional Tolvar warparty that attacks. But if you leave my people and my allies in peace, they should return the favor.”

“I see.”

“So...are you an exile of your people?”

Behind her, he saw her tail shift, then begin to sway. “I thought we discussed that last time.”

“You didn’t give me a direct answer,” Jak replied.

She let out a small laugh. “I suppose not. And a direct answer is what you seek?”

“Yes.”

“Hmm.” She put her hands on her hips and fixed him with a strong look, an expression of mild amusement on her face now. Jak waited. She let out a short sigh. “Very well, that is twice you have had my life in your hands and given it back to me. The truth is: I walked away from my people, such as they are. I tire of their cruelty and their eternal war for dominance of this little island. They were not sorry to see me go. So I suppose I am an exile.”

“What do you intend?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “For now, I desire to live alone and be alone. I want to know who I am when I am around no others.”

“Will you leave my people in peace while you determine that?” he asked.

“Yes, if they do the same.”

“They should. I’ll let them know to leave you be. If there’s nothing else, I have other things to do,” Jak said.

“Wait...your offer to join your tribe, it is a truthful offer?” she asked.

“It is a truthful offer,” he confirmed.

She stared at him with her glowing red eyes. “I will think about it.”

He nodded and headed out of the clearing. For a moment, he considered trying to pick back up the trail of the blue woman, but he had already spent enough time out here as it was.

Jak headed north, towards his home, towards the women he loved.

Looking Forward At 2023

Here we are, at the beginning of another year.

2022 was an interesting year for me, in a number of ways, not all of them good.

I’ve got a lot I want to talk about in this post, as a few things have changed. Let’s get started.

WHAT I GOT DONE IN 2022

  • I wrapped up the freebies trilogies, and finally wrote the Epilogue to Lust & Adventure.

  • I completed A Warm Place.

  • I completed Our Own Way.

  • I got three Raw novels out.

  • I finally started doing audiobooks!

  • I launched and almost finished the Monster Girl Inn Trilogy.

  • I took down my entire backlog and posted it to Smashwords and to this website as free downloads.

  • I wrote a short story that will be in a haremlit anthology called Damsels & Dragons. You can contribute to the Kickstarter here!

  • I managed to get at least some work done on my mysterious Horror Harem project.

And that’s it. In early 2022, I decided I needed to take a more relaxed stance on my expectations and prioritize my mental health. Obviously, not only did my productivity take a hit, but I didn’t really stick to it, as more than once I hit really bad, really hardcore burnout and misery. This is why I didn’t produce all that much this year. I’m hoping to correct this in 2023.

WHAT I HOPE TO GET DONE IN 2023

  • Finish Monster Girl Inn. I’m intending to finish up the third book soon, within the next week or two.

  • Finish Raw. This is sort of my big project for the year. I have 5 more novels to write in this series and I’m really aiming to get them done sooner rather than later.

  • Write a cougar harem trilogy. I’ll speak more about it later, but basically, I’m finally going all-in on a modern day, genuine cougar harem story. It’s going to be pure slice-of-life.

  • Get at least one horror harem novel written. I had a LOT of false starts on this one, but I feel pretty good about the current project.

  • I’ll be removing Like A Fine Wine in February. I’ll talk about it more below for the curious.

  • Get a lot more audiobooks out, although I don’t really have any control over this. It’s all in RGP’s hands, and so far they’re handling it very well.

  • I added an exhaustive bibliography that chronicles everything I have ever written. I’ll probably make a self-indulgent post talking about some of the titles I’ve never spoken of before that have been acknowledged by this bibliography.

  • I have released all of my backlog (save for Parasexual, but it is coming very soon) on my website as free, kindle-friendly files. You can download them all here! (Like A Fine Wine will be added after it comes down.)

  • I’m also hoping to get a bit more work done on my incest erotica and Dragon Age fan fiction, but obviously these are rather low priority at the moment.

You may have been looking for the rewrite of Our Own Way and the near-future sci-fi slice-of-life I mentioned in previous updates on the list, and if that is the case, don’t worry, they are not abandoned, they have just been pushed down the line. I will explain the reason for this below.

REFLECTIONS & REVELATIONS

A bit dramatic, but that’s what I do sometimes. I made references to the fact that I had been spending the final portion of 2022 reflecting on, well, just about everything. That, combined with a few other things, has caused me to reconsider my overall approach to my writing career. I’ll go over these changes and my reasonings behind them below.

  • Here was the biggest thing that I realized, and it sort of hit me like a truck: my haremlit offerings are severely depleted. Removing most of my backlog left my library anemic, and when I made the call to remove Parasexual & Like A Fine Wine, that was sort of a ‘holy shit’ moment. At present, I have 5 haremlit series on offer. While two of them are finished and series I still feel pretty good about, two of them aren’t yet finished, and one of those two unfinished series is a trilogy that did not do very well. The final series, while finished, also suffers from a triple threat of being A) novellas, B) poorly covered, and C) labeled as erotica. Our Own Way’s potential was mangled beyond hope of salvation without a full-fledged rewrite by my handling of it. But in my defense, it was just a little side project to help keep my sanity, I had no idea people would respond to it so strongly, nor that I would come up with so many extra ideas after the fact. Because of having such a depleted library, I realized, I need not just more titles, but more series, and quickly. This has led me to the decision of creating a few trilogies (like the upcoming cougar harem).

  • This leads into my next revelation: I really need to stop writing nine novel epics. It’s causing problems, and kind of on almost every front. Creatively, financially, from the reader’s side of things, just all around, problems. I’ve ultimately determined that series consisting of fewer, but longer, novels will ultimately be better for everyone. They’ll be better for me, because I can go through a series more quickly and effectively and stave off burnout, and they’ll be better for you as I feel like I’ll be able to deliver a better-told narrative. So instead of nine 60,000 word novels, I’ll be aiming for something closer to 5-6 80-90,000 word novels.

  • Next: I can lean more into the slice-of-life aspects of my work. From my perspective, my works fall onto a spectrum where one end reads SURVIVAL and the other reads SLICE-OF-LIFE. Obviously, Monster Girl Inn leans more towards slice-of-life, while A Warm Place and Raw lean more towards survival. The truth of the matter is that while I enjoy writing both, on the whole, I’m finding that I enjoy writing slice-of-life stuff more. Our Own Way was something of a revelation. I didn’t know people were so interested in something where the stakes were so low, comparatively speaking. I have a number of ideas that are more about slice-of-life stuff and relationship building, as opposed to fighting monsters and fleeing disaster. Though I still want to write about that stuff, too. So more of my content is going to be more Our Own Way and less Raw. Hell, I may even take a shot at writing a shorter, more slice-of-life trilogy or quadrilogy set in the Raw universe with new characters. Maybe. I liked that early-narrative feel book one had.

  • Final thing I realized: My pen name. I’ve been talking about launching a pen name for literal years now. A lot goes into the consideration of a pen name, at least for me. I don’t want to half-ass anything. The fact that I’ve been considering it for actual years is a testament to this. The thing is, this whole pen name thing has been kind of like a scale. One side of the scale is negatives, one is positive. For a long time, the positives outweighed the negatives. But as time has gone on, the negatives have begun to outweigh the positives. And this is now where I find myself. So, basically, I’ve decided that, and I want to clarify, when it comes to haremlit, it makes the most sense to just stick with Misty Vixen. If anyone is truly curious, I can go into detail, but the short of it is: it makes more sense to keep my works in one place, so long as those works are all haremlit. The reason I’m specifying this is because, in the future, I may want to write something that isn’t haremlit, but still let my haremlit readers know about it, and that would make sense to start a new name for. So, in short: I’ll be posting my horror harem to Misty Vixen.

  • Last thing I want to touch on: why did I decide to pull down Parasexual & Like A Fine Wine?

    • For Parasexual, I originally had intended to pull it down, but ultimately decided it was close enough to haremlit to work. But then, as time went on, I became less certain, even going so far as to pair it with a warning that it might not be for everyone. In the end, I realized that my initial conclusion that it should be pulled down was the right conclusion.

    • For Like A Fine Wine, it came as something of a surprise to me when I reread the first novel late last year that it wasn’t really a true haremlit novel. While it doesn’t actually break any of the rules, I realized that the relationships are too casual, and half the harem leaves at the end. Now, this would have been rectified with a sequel series, but as time has gone on, I’ve ultimately had to admit to myself that I do not want to write a sequel series and, overall, it would be a really bad idea to try it. For those of you who were looking forward to this, I apologize. I genuinely did intend to write it when I finished Like A Fine Wine, but as time has gone on, I’ve felt worse about the idea rather than better. So, again, I am sorry about that.

A LOOK AT MY LIBRARY’S FUTURE

Now comes my favorite part! The part where I get to explain how I feel about my works right now, and speculate about how I’ll feel about them in the future. If you’re looking for information on something from the past, the present, or the future that I have mentioned at some point before now, this is where you want to check.

  • THE OLD STUFF

    • PARANORMAL SHARED UNIVERSE: This includes PARANORMAL PASSIONS, PINK, ROOMMATES WITH BENEFITS, & PARASEXUAL. I’m still pretty confident that this one is dead, and I will write nothing in it again. The only spark of hope I have for those holding out is that I could possible envision myself writing something that’s basically Our Own Way, but with paranormal girls. If I do, I will have to determine if it makes more sense to create a new universe, or set it in this one. But I would say, for safety’s sake, consider this universe dead.

    • POST-APOCALYPTIC SHARED UNIVERSE: This includes SEX & SURVIVAL, THE PALE REDHEAD, A NEW WORLD, & HAVEN. I feel roughly the same about this one. However, I would say that the chances of my writing something set in this universe is significantly higher. I still like this universe, and in my quest to produce more series quickly, I may explore a trilogy set here. If I do, I’ll definitely ensure to involve cameos from Haven.

    • SCI-FI SHARED UNIVERSE: This includes HELLCATS, EXPLORATION, ALIEN HAREM, VALKYRIES, DESIRE, AMAZONIAN’S LOVE, LIKE A SEX TOY, BLIND DATE, & LIKE A FINE WINE. I think this universe is also probably dead. Although I have a few ideas that might make sense to set in it, it will ultimately come down to an in-the-moment decision whether or not to do something unique or revisit this universe. The more times goes on, the more I feel that the correct decision is to leave my old erotica days behind me.

    • FANTASY SHARED UNIVERSE: This includes WANDERLUST, LARGE & LOVELY, MY UNDEAD LOVER, ROYAL LUST, LUST & ADVENTURE, LAY OF THE LAND, SNAKESKIN, ADVENTUROUS & DEMONESS. This is the only one I’m confident that will have one more series, the DEMONESS reboot. I originally had a much larger, interconnected, and honestly epic storyline in mind for this universe, and as time has gone on, I’ve ultimately decided that Demoness will serve well as a vehicle for this storyline.

      • DEMONESS: I’m making a notation here. At the moment, I’m giving serious consideration to converting Demoness into haremlit. Now, I know some people will have an instant knee-jerk reaction to this, but hear me out. I began running into a problem around Demoness V, one that I knew would only get worse as time went on. John and Yelena’s relationship is really the greatest part of the series, but the thing was, I was running out of ways to make it interesting. A lot of the unique emotional difficulties that arose over the course of the first four novels made for some very interesting writing. But if the series had gone on, I would have run out of natural ideas. Adding in even just two other girls into the mix would solve this, and give me a lot more opportunities for interesting and unique interactions. It would also give me a chance to make an actual slow-burn harem, something a lot of people have asked me about and I’ve never really been able to deliver on. I’m still batting the idea around, and I’m open to hearing your thoughts, but I figured I owed fans of the series a heads up, as that would be a significant change.

    • A WARM PLACE: Technically not old, but it is finished. I’m happy with where it ended, consider it done. At most, I may set one or two of my incest eroticas in this universe.

  • THE CURRENT STUFF

    • MONSTER GIRL INN: This is getting wrapped up very soon and then that will be the end of it. In truth, I don’t really see much in the way of a future there, primarily because it feels like the story failed to really catch and hold both me and the readership.

    • RAW: So, I’ve got five novels left to go here. The story is pretty locked in, including the broad strokes of the novels. I’m hoping to have this wrapped up by June, but, uh…we’ll see how that turns out. As I mentioned above, a trilogy set in this universe with some more relationship/slice-of-life focus with new characters may not be out of the question. I’ve got an idea I’ve been toying with for awhile, but ultimately we’ll see.

    • OUR OWN WAY: I will rewrite this. I’ve got a LOT of ideas and want to make this like 5-6 long novels, expanding greatly on the characters and their plans and their attempt to set up a life for themselves. In truth, though, we probably won’t see this until 2024. I want to finish Raw, and then get at least a few trilogies under my belt. Once I feel comfortable, Our Own Way should be my next big project.

  • THE FUTURE STUFF

    • QUITE UNLADYLIKE: This is the short I wrote for the haremlit fantasy anthology. It has no connection to any other universe, though if you liked Monster Girl Inn or any of my old fantasy stuff, you’ll probably like it. I doubt I’m going to write anything else related to this. I wanted to write something that was encapsulated.

    • MODERN COUGAR/MILF HAREM: My next serious project after Raw. Basically, imagine Our Own Way vibes, but all older women. I’m feeling good about this one. I’m looking at this to be a trilogy of longer novels. I’m really hoping people like this one, as it’s something I’ve been talking about for years, and also people have been asking about for years.

    • UNTITLED SCI-FI SLICE-OF-LIFE: I mentioned this earlier. I’m still gonna do this. Still feel good about it. I like the characters, the setting, the general vibe of it. I’m also very curious to see how people react to it because it’s a bit different than a lot of stuff I’ve written.

    • UNTITLED POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL TRILOGY: A while ago, I mentioned somewhere possibly doing a simple, shorter series set in A Warm Place, that focused on a small group of people just trying to fix up a house and make a life for themselves. That was the seed of this idea. It’s an original universe, and focuses on a guy and a few women he runs into trying to fix up a shelter in the middle of nowhere with monsters and dangerous people around. This is probably what I’ll be writing after the cougar harem, as it’s the next in my trilogies ideas.

    • HORROR HAREM: Whew boy. It’s been up and down, side to side, thither and fucking yon with this one. I’ve had half a dozen false starts. But now, finally, I do feel like I’ve decided what I’m going to be writing first. I’ll be working on this one in the background where I can find time, since it’s going to be a gamble. I will speak more on this when I have news, but what I can say now is: It looks like I’ll be going with a Sci-Fi Survival/Horror. It’s going to have a video-gamey type feel (not LitRPG). Think sort of Doom 3 and Dead Space vibes.

  • OTHER STUFF

    • INCEST EROTICA: So I’d really like to make some headway on this. Get SOMETHING off the ground beyond just Kyra’s Game. I’m still going to take a shot at making Kyra’s Game a trilogy of shorts, and I’ve got a ton of ideas beyond that. Basically, I’m just going to be writing shorts for awhile. I’ve got a mom-son idea set in the A Warm Place universe, another mom-son idea set in my shared Fantasy Universe, a brother-sister story I wrote a few years back and never really did anything with, a mom-son series I wrote on the down-low under another name to test the waters and now want to re-release and finish. I know at some point I want to go big with one, huge incest harem series. Like, the production level of the other stuff, with full-on covers and full-length novels, stuff like that. Imagine basically Our Own Way type story/setting, but with incest. Really, it’s just a matter of finding/making time for this to happen.

    • FAN FICTION: The Dragon Age fan fic, THE MATCHMAKER OF SKYHOLD, has been talking to me recently. Enough that I did take it out, dust it off, and write a few more chapters near the end of the year. If I make much more progress, I’ll have to put it back up on the site. Otherwise, I don’t have any other fan fiction in mind.

    • LARA X. LUST: For the sake of clarity, and in case anyone was wondering otherwise, I had a heavy hand in writing the first three Desperate Times novels. However, I have had zero involvement in any other projects, including the fourth Desperate Times. It’s all Lara now, and I doubt that’s going to change.

    • CRYSTAL CANDY STUFF: Wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t cover this. Obviously A Warm Place was already covered. Maidens & Mayhem and Planet of the Bugs are both dead and they’ll stay dead. Refuge…I still want to do something with this, but I’m a lot less sure now how exactly it will manifest. Enough time has passed that at this point there’s significant overlap between this and another story idea, and I may just combine the two. But in either scenario, it’s still a long way off.

    • OTHER: I’ve got some farther out, more ambitious ideas up my sleeve. I’ve got a sci-fi/horror/adventure epic planned that’s been brewing for a long time now and I’m sure will brew for a long time yet. It won’t be like other series in that it will go on for quite awhile. I’ve got a sort of sci-fi/espionage blended with horror (and obviously harem) idea that’s also fairly ambitious and I think would be REALLY kickass to write and to read, but it’s also over the horizon. I’ve definitely got some more gritty survival stuff. But I don’t want to get too ahead of myself there. I’ve got more than enough to carry me through 2024 with what I’ve spoken of just in this post alone. Beyond that? Probably got enough stuff to carry me through to 2030.

    • FINAL THING: The last thing I want to talk about is that I’ve noticed a rise in Romance For Men, (there’s even a SubReddit for it now), and honestly I’d call a lot of what I write men’s romance. I gotta admit, the idea of writing a romance between one guy and one woman, or maybe one guy and two women, is really appealing. I’m currently considering putting together a new pen name (which was why I was so specific above) to experiment with Men’s Romance, as, although it won’t break any of the rules of haremlit, I can’t really call it haremlit (not enough ladies), and thus wouldn’t feel safe releasing it as Misty Vixen. Though I would publicly acknowledge that I wrote it. I dunno, let me know what you think of this idea.

I think that’s it. I hope everyone has a good 2023. I know for myself personally, my new year’s resolution is to find a way to balance my work against my mental health more successfully.

Good luck out there.

Monster Girl Inn III Preview

Finally, here it is!

This is the first chapter of Monster Girl Inn III, the final novel in the trilogy. You can read Chapter II over on Patreon right now, and you will be able to read all the following chapters as I post them, also on my Patreon for 3$/month.

Victor fought to quell the anxiety as it grew somewhere deep in his gut as he led Hazel through the trees of the Hinterland.

“I wanted to thank you again for coming, I know you’re busy,” he said, pushing back a particularly large and low-hanging branch, allowing her passage.

“I’m not that busy,” Hazel replied, “and this is important. In truth, I wish you had told me sooner.”

“We’ve been busy with the inn and the ring seems to be working. It’s just, she said she should be awake in a week, and it’s now the eighth day…”

“These things can be unpredictable. Can you run it by me again?” Hazel asked. “You were a little, uh, light, on the details of some of this. She’s...where did you meet her, exactly?”

“Ilona is her name. We found her in a cave. She’s the necromancer who was sending the undead all over the place.”

“All right. The fact that you’ve got her ill and comatose in your inn means the meeting wasn’t hostile, I imagine.”

He shook his head, ducking under another branch. “No, she wasn’t. She’s sick. Lethally.”

“I got that part, and that’s it’s exclusive to elves. But did I understand this right? She intentionally cursed herself?” Hazel replied.

“Yes. To be undead. To buy more time.”

She let out a small laugh of appreciation. “She’s inventive. And brave.”

“I think more desperate in this case, but yes, she does seem brave.”

“All right. I’m not completely sure I’ll be able to help, though.”

“I know. I might be wasting your time, this might not even be necessary–”

“It’s fine, Victor. It isn’t a waste of time. Even if I can do nothing for the poor woman, I have been wanting to see you and the others, and visit your inn again.”

“We’ve made a lot of progress on it,” Victor replied.

“That’s good to hear.”

A lot of progress felt like a bit of an understatement. Having Nyx and now Delphine around so consistently meant that they’d been able to get much more done, and having Ilona there to care for and fret over had filled them all with a kind of intense, nervous energy.

They’d all been doing everything that needed doing, and consequently, work that he thought might take over a month or even two had been mostly wrapped up in little over a week. Delphine especially was working very hard.

There were times where it seemed like she was full of energy that she was trying to burn off, always asking for a new task and then going at it with an intense, almost ferocious focus.

It had been a trying time for all of them, but especially for Nyx.

At this point, the others were starting to pick up on it. Delphine seemed to be in the know, as she just gave an understanding expression whenever it became obvious that the stress was starting to get to Nyx, but Fiona and Jezzy still seemed confused and worried.

In a way, it was very surprising and gave a deep and, if anything, worrying view into just how much emotions and trauma could affect someone.

After five hundred years, he would have thought she’d be a lot more stoic.

It felt like a double-edged sword.

It was good that she still felt things, and intensely. That the relentless passage of time didn’t wear away who she was.

But it worried him that even fifty years from now he’d probably still have nightmares and have the occasional cry over what happened with his family.

When he’d asked her about it a few days ago, all she had to say was: It never goes away, but it does get easier.

“Oh wow, you have made a lot of progress here,” Hazel murmured as they at last broke through the dense vegetation of the Hinter.

Fiona had told him that they’d be able to clear a path to the main trail and maintain it with a bit of magic and some help from Fauna and a few friendly dryads.

They’d replaced the windows, the front door, fixed the roof and patched the holes in the walls. And thanks to a neat little spell that Nyx knew, the repairs looked seamless.

Speaking of Nyx…

“Oh my!” Hazel gasped as a shadow fell across them and Nyx landed heavily not far away.

“Sorry,” she replied, “but I’m glad you’re here.” She walked over. Her wings were flexing slowly open and closed behind her, and her tail was swaying. “How have you been? Your shop doing well?” She glanced back at the inn.

There was a slightly manic edge to her voice.

“Fine, and yeah,” Hazel replied. “...are you okay, Nyx?”

“I’m just nervous. I was out flying, trying to take my mind off things, but that didn’t help. I’m worried about Ilona...Victor told you, right?”

Hazel nodded. “He explained to me.”

“Okay, good. Will you look at her?”

“Yes.”

They all looked over as the front doors opened up and Jezzy came out.

“Is she awake?” Nyx asked before she could speak.

“No, no change, I’m sorry,” Fiona replied. “Hello, Hazel.”

“Hi, Fiona. Why don’t you show me to this dark elf, Ilona? I’ll see if there’s any insight I can offer,” Hazel suggested.

Fiona nodded. “This way.”

“Are you a healer?” Victor asked.

“I’m a witch,” Hazel replied as they all walked inside.

The main room was still fairly barren. Furniture was the last thing they needed.

“What does that mean, exactly?” Victor murmured, following them upstairs.

“That I have come across a great deal of knowledge in my lifetime, and that yes, I am a healer, when the situation calls for it. You mentioned a ring blessed by a God? I don’t think I’ll be able to outdo that, though.”

They came to the second story and as they approached the room Ilona was in, Fiona opened up the door and poked her head out.

“Hi, no change,” she said. “And hi Hazel.”

“Hi, Fiona,” Hazel replied.

They’d gotten used to saying that, ‘no change’, to Nyx, because she’d ask so often.

They tried not to crowd as Hazel came into the room. She took off her backpack and set it aside, then did the same with her traveling cloak. Victor studied Ilona as Hazel approached her bedside and sat down gently beside her.

She looked better, there was no doubt about that, and not just because they had removed her curse and all of its most obvious markings. Namely her veins being visible beneath her skin and a deathly pallor. She’d seemed generally less frail and fragile now.

But there was no denying the sickness and the curse had taken a heavy toll on her body.

Hazel touched her wrist for a moment. “Her heart beats regularly, if a bit slow,” she murmured, then put her own wrist to Ilona’s forehead. “Normal temperature.” She held her hand near her nose. “Breathing is a little shallow, but regular.”

Carefully, she leaned in and opened one of her eyes. Peering into it for a moment, she did the same with her other eye. “Her eyes seem fine. Has anything noteworthy happened since you cured her and put on the ring?”

“Not really,” Jezzy said.

“She shifted a little yesterday,” Nyx said. “And twice we heard murmuring, like she was having a bad dream. Once the day before yesterday and once the day after we put on the ring, if that has any significance.”

“Hmm.” Hazel laid her hand over the back of Ilona’s own hand, the one with the ring, and closed her eyes. An expression of concentration came onto her face. After a moment she stood back up, her eyes opening. “It’s doing its job, and it still feels intensely powerful.”

“So there’s nothing you can do?” Nyx asked.

“No. Normally I might try a little magic, but in truth I don’t want to interfere with the ring’s own magical properties. Although it looks like the curse has had no lingering effects on her body–whatever you did removed it completely–Black Cough is very serious. I’ve dealt with it before and I know that even if you manage to get your hands on the cure, it’s usually only a two in three chance that it’ll work.”

“Wait, so, it’s not a guarantee–” Nyx began, but Hazel shook her head.

“No, no, it’s okay. I mean...technically nothing’s a guarantee, but if there’s anything in this realm that can cure advanced Black Cough, it’s that ring. I can feel the raw magical energy. It’s just that this kind of sickness puts a heavy toll on the body. She just needs more time. I could be wrong, but I think she’ll wake up soon.”

“I can’t stand this godsdamned waiting,” Nyx growled. Her wings flexed suddenly and knocked over a chair. She sighed heavily. “Sorry.”

“It’ll be okay, Nyx. She’ll be okay,” Fiona murmured.

“I hope so.” Nyx heaved another sigh and walked out of the room abruptly. “I have to do something or I’m going to lose my patience.”

“Wait, don’t fly away,” Victor said, leaning out in the hallway after her. “I want to come with you. There’s something we need to do anyway.”

“Fine,” she said, heading back downstairs.

Victor turned back to face the others. “All right, I should keep this short with how impatient she is. Hazel: thank you for coming, it was good to see you, I’ll catch up with you later.”

“Same. And thanks for having me,” she replied.

He nodded. “Jezzy, Fiona: I love you, I’m going to go help Nyx keep busy.”

“We’ll be here,” Fiona said. “And I love you, too.”

Jezzy smiled. “You know I love you. Go be with her. See how Delphine’s divinations are going.”

He nodded. “Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Uh…” He paused, considering the situation for a moment, just in case he was forgetting anything.

It had been a busy day.

A busy week.

“We’ll handle things here,” Jezzy said.

He nodded. “All right, thanks.”

Victor headed back downstairs. He still had his pack, his cloak, his gear from traveling down to Hearth Haven to ask Hazel for help. As he moved through the main room he looked around again and found his imagination roaming briefly.

It was easy to envision it full of tables and chairs, and people. People talking, people eating, people finding a place to get in out of the cold and enjoy some company. And, surprisingly, it was easy to envision himself being on the other side of that for once.

The person helping in the kitchen instead of looking into it occasionally while he waited for food or had a bit to drink.

That struck its own chord of anxiety, though.

He wasn’t so much worried about his role in the situation as he was worried about it not working. He’d become invested, emotionally speaking, but more to the point, he’d become invested in Fiona’s emotional investment in her dream.

When they’d talked earlier about the potential for failure, he’d believed what he’d told her: that there were any number of ways to manifest her dream of facilitating communication between village-dwellers and monsters, but…

It was obvious that this was a very big deal to her.

To all of them now.

Victor walked outside and found Nyx pacing back and forth. Well, they had some different priorities.

“What are we doing?” she asked as he came to stand before her.

“Let’s find Delphine,” he replied.

She nodded. “Yeah, okay.”

Without another word, she scooped him up in her arms and shot into the air, wings pumping as she gained dozens and then hundreds of feet.

And then they were sailing through the sky.

The Misty Vixen Newsletter (December 2022)

Time for some updates.

I’ve got a lot on my mind and because I’m still ruminating on it, I’ll keep this update short. I’m having to reevaluate how I’ve been going about things, but I don’t want to really go in-depth with it until January.

So we’ll go with my favorite method of the bullet-point list to get the pertinent information across.

  • In case you missed it, I made a blog post detailing why I needed to step back for a bit and take a break. About two weeks later, I can say that I do feel a bit better. I feel at least well enough to go back to what I’m calling light duty for December.

  • That light duty is: writing Monster Girl Inn III. I doubt it will be finished by the end of the month, but I’m hoping for an early January release. I have it planned out, I have the cover, and I’ve written a few chapters so far. I will begin posting those chapters on Patreon next Monday, ideally moving at about a chapter a day pace Monday - Friday, until completion.

  • Raw III Audio is officially out.

  • A Reminder: A Warm Place audio is launching on December 5th.

  • Monster Girl Inn II Audio is now up for pre-order. It launches December 14th.

  • Haven 2 will be up for pre-order before long.

  • For reasons that I will get into in the next update, I have decided that I will be pulling down Parasexual, by the end of December, and Like A Fine Wine, by the end of February. They will be republished to Smashwords, and also offered for free as Kindle downloads from my site. At present, I have dropped the price of all of them, both the individual titles and the collections, to 99 cents. So if you missed any of them from the last sale, you can grab them for cheap. For the extremely curious who must know now, the short answer of why I’m doing this is the same reason I pulled down the rest of my backlog.

  • Making slow progress on my first horror harem project.

That’s basically it. I’ve got more reflecting to do on things and December has traditionally been the start of a bad time for me anyway, as I’ve got SAD on top of depression/anxiety, so you may see me try a side project or two. Which basically means: I might fire back up my Dragon Age fan fiction or I may start writing and posting new incest erotica.

Anyway, wish me luck, and I hope you all have a good month.

I Need A Break

So I keep going to a really bad place, mentally and emotionally speaking, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I need an actual, real break for a bit, and then do some ‘light duty’ for awhile after.

An apt metaphor for where I’m at right now is: I’m in a car where something’s wrong and it keeps dying every five miles or so, and I keep having to turn it back on. Technically speaking, I can keep going, just restarting it again and again and again, but the progress I make will be torturously slow.

Or, I can have it towed and take the time to figure out WTF is wrong and fix it, and then drive like a normal person.

The most immediate effect of this is that I won’t be writing Raw V next, or this year. I’ve been attempting to make progress on it for weeks now, over a month, and for some reason it just IS NOT HAPPENING. I’ve made a frighteningly low amount of progress.

I’m positive I’ve made this comparison before, but it feels like that scene in Armageddon where they’ve been drilling the asteroid for hours and they’re supposed to be over 200 feet deep, and they reveal they’ve only managed 58 feet.

At some point, I looked at what I had for Raw V, and thought about how long it’s been since I began ‘working’ on it, and then I thought about how long it’s been since my last release, and then I thought about how long it’s been since the last Raw release, and something sort of just broke?

I think it became too much pressure. This is on top of the normal pressure I already feel from feeling like I’m not writing fast enough, or good enough, and realizing a lot of other authors are pulling WAY far ahead of me apparently with ease.

I’m getting off track. So I’m putting Raw V away for now, and I’m sorry for that. It was a really hard decision, because Raw is, by far, my most popular series. But I have to step away from it or I’m going to lose my mind.

Once I feel like I have both hands back on the wheel again, I’m going to take a shot at writing the final Monster Girl Inn novel, mainly because I’d like to get it wrapped up and just have one series to focus on for the moment.

After that I’ll take another break to reassess where I’m at, and then make another serious go at Raw V. I’d really like to wrap up the Raw series before mid-2023.

At the moment, I’m not sure of anything, though.

I’m going to try and figure stuff out.
